Last week I attended the Church Solutions Conference and learned from some great leaders, wound up in Mexico and found myself at a Sun’s game!   Here’s a recap of what I learned in no particular order:

  1. First, getting into Mexico is much easier than getting out of Mexico.  4 hours at the border can result in considering eating places you normally would not – like Wendys.
  2. Josh Whitehead, Executive Pastor at Faith Promise Church in Knoxville Tennessee, talked about Strategic Staff Planning, Development and Evaluation.  There’s nothing like listening to someone who is father down the road and Josh demonstrated some great insight.  Shared some great ideas on performance management.
  3. Will Mancini, author, “Church Unique” presented an overview of his vision clarity. As a “clarity evangelist,” Will has served as vision architect for hundreds of churches across the country.  Will’s love for the local church and skill for facilitating vision clarity was more than a little thought provoking.  I have already picked up my copy and look forward spending some time working through questions like these:

    • If you are fulfilling someone else’s vision, who will accomplish your’s?
    • What can your church do better than 10,000 others?
    • If words create worlds, what are you saying?

    • “Sell the problem before you sell the solution.”
  4. John Purcell, Church Leadership Coach and Consultant, with Transform talked about Developing Disciples and Leaders for Kingdom Impact.  He did an incredible job explaining how transforming people through life-on-life discipleship are both vital and a necessity of the local church.
  5. Jim Tomberlin, Church Consultant, Third Quarter Consulting moderated a panel discussion on the “Components and Trends of Multisite Churches”.  On the panel were Terry Crist, Senior Pastor, City of Grace Church in Scottsdale, AZ.      Larry Osborne, Lead Pastor, North Coast Church in San Diego and John Bishop, Senior Pastor, Living Hope Church in Vancouver, Wash.  Jim Tomberlin is a guru and it was great to hear how these guys are getting it done!
  6. Holly Whitlock-Glave, Owner and President, TRACK Team gave a great presentation on Building Successful Volunteer Programs.  No question that a church’s ability to impact the lives of those in its local, national and global community is directly related to its ability to build successful volunteer teams. Holly pointed out that too often, leaders unknowingly sabotage these valuable ministry resources. Her session examined how and why churches are negatively impacting their volunteer teams, as well as providing solutions to turn things around and build successful, God-honoring volunteer programs.  Good stuff!
  7. Found out the Church Marketing Sucks has another URL for more conservative folks, Church Marketing Stinks , too funny.  Michael Buckingham, Director,  is the founder and creative director of Holy Cow Creative and really stirred things up in terms of creativity and sermon branding = creating series that are remarkable.
There was much more but that is all for now – I’m still digesting ideas and notes.   I’m very fortunate to be in a position to attend events like Church Solutions Conference and thankful these folks put on such a great event!

I am attending a great conference this week and thought I’d share my schedule.  There was a lot to choose from and you can check out the conference here.

The Church Solutions Conference & Expo is a national event geared toward pastors, church business administrators, facility managers and other church executives.  As a business-focused conference, it’s suppose to provide real-world tactics for churches to thrive amidst today’s real-world challenges.  We will see.
